U.K. punk outfit Vice Squad emerged as a key player amid Britain’s second-wave punk explosion. With the genre turning increasingly uniform and dominated by male voices, the group distinguished itself through its female frontwoman, vocalist Beki Bondage, who also ranked among the earliest scene figures to champion animal rights and vegetarianism through her lyrics. Delivering taut, hook-driven tracks marked by an unapologetic stance, the band embraced its agitator role and maintained ties to the grassroots circuit even while briefly aligned with a major label. The clearest record of their first era, spanning 1979 to 1985, remains the 1981 debut No Cause for Concern, which contained their defining number “Last Rockers.” When the members reconvened in 1997, they reentered the studio for 1999’s Resurrection, mixing fresh material with updated versions of longstanding favorites, while later efforts such as 2006’s Defiant, 2009’s London Underground, and 2020’s Battle of Britain displayed an even rawer, more abrasive edge than their initial incarnation.

The Bristol-based act came together in early 1979 after the dissolution of local groups Contingent and TV Brakes. Its founding roster included Beki Bondage (born Rebecca Louise Bond) handling lead vocals, Dave Bateman on guitar, Mark Hambly on bass, and Shane Baldwin on drums. Following only three practice sessions, Vice Squad performed publicly for the first time on 12 April 1979 at Bristol University. Momentum proved slow until 1980, when Riot City Records issued the three-track 7-inch pairing “Last Rockers” with “Living on Dreams” and “Latex Love.” That release climbed to number seven on the U.K. Indie Chart; its follow-up, 1981’s “Resurrection” backed by “Hot Blood” and “Humane,” reached number four on the same listing. BBC broadcaster John Peel took notice, taping the first of two sessions for his program that year, after which the quartet joined U.K. Subs for a national tour.

Building on the two singles’ performance, the band arranged for EMI’s Zonophone imprint to handle distribution of its Riot City output, a move many supporters viewed as a commercial compromise. Nevertheless, the debut album No Cause for Concern—featuring a muscular reading of Bob Dylan’s “The Times They Are A-Changin’”—sold steadily and peaked at number 32 on the U.K. Albums Chart. Subsequent dates across Britain and Europe preceded the second LP, Stand Strong Stand Proud, after whose release Vice Squad crossed the Atlantic. Exhaustion from the trek prompted Beki Bondage’s departure upon the group’s return; she soon formed Ligotage alongside former U.K. Subs drummer Steve Roberts and later fronted Beki & the Bombshells. The remaining members recruited vocalist Lia and guitarist Mark “Sooty” Byrne, and this expanded lineup recorded 1985’s Shot Away for Anagram Records before disbanding at year’s end due to poor sales.

In 1997 Beki Bondage accepted an invitation for Vice Squad to perform at the Holidays In The Sun festival and assembled a new configuration featuring ex-Bombshells Paul Rooney on guitar, Stilton on bass, and Pumpy on drums. Although conceived as a one-off, the positive reaction led Bondage and Rooney to keep the project active, resulting in the 1998 album Get a Life. Michael Giaquinto and Tony Piper assumed bass and drum duties in 1999, enabling an extended European trek followed by a U.S. package tour alongside T.S.O.L., D.R.I., the Vibrators, and Chelsea. Resurrection appeared the same year. Throughout the ensuing decades numerous musicians cycled through the ranks, yet Bondage and Rooney remained the core, with the singer also incorporating rhythm guitar.

Lo-Fi Life surfaced in 2000 via Sudden Death Records, the Canadian label operated by D.O.A.’s Joe Keithley (also known as Joey Shithead). A brief return to EMI yielded 2003’s Rich and Famous, supporting further road work across Britain, Europe, and North America that reinforced the band’s reputation for energetic live shows. Defiant, released in 2006 on STP Records in the U.K. and SOS Records in the United States, represented some of their most forceful material to date. After repeated frustrations with outside imprints, including the non-release of a finished album in 2007, the group established its own Last Rockers Records, debuting the label with 2009’s London Underground. Additional global touring included a 2011 Rebellion Festival appearance that featured both a full-band set and an acoustic performance under the name the Dirty Folkers. Punk Rock Radio arrived in 2012, followed by Cardboard Country in 2014, whose title track drew inspiration from a sprawling homeless settlement constructed from discarded boxes. A split EP with the Droogettes emerged in 2017, and the band issued its own Ignored to Death EP the next year. The long-awaited full-length Battle of Britain finally reached stores in 2020. In 2023 Cleopatra produced a deluxe reissue of the original 1980 “Last Rockers” single, pressed on red, white, or blue vinyl and housed in a gatefold sleeve containing previously unseen photographs.
