Biography
Like many ensembles across Africa, Vijana Jazz receives sponsorship, in this instance from the youth wing of Tanzania’s governing political organization Chama cha Mapinduzi. The ensemble maintained strong popularity over an extended period. A 1978 government statute permitting bands to convert currency for imported equipment introduced synthesizers and a drum machine, producing a nuanced shift in their sonic approach. Although the loss of the group’s leader in 1990 dealt a setback, the musicians have sustained live appearances.
