Biography
Elvin Brandhi, the Welsh experimental musician, joined forces with multiple artists tied to the Nyege Nyege collective in Kampala, Uganda, forming the Villaelvin project. Its first release, Headroof in 2020, delivered an intense set of deconstructed post-industrial rhythms paired with fragmented vocals.
Brandhi has sustained an active schedule of performances and recordings since 2013, shaping stream-of-consciousness lyrics across jittery abstract beats. She constitutes one half of the absurdist noise duo Yeah You with her father Gwilly Edmondez and has shared stages with Eugene Chadbourne, Tony Allen, Sensational, and many additional artists. In April 2019 she took up residence at the villa in Kampala, Uganda, where she tracked material with local musicians including percussionist Omutaba, rappers Hakim and Swordman Kitala, and producers Don Zilla and Oise. Issued in 2020 on Hakuna Kulala, the sister label of Nyege Nyege, Headroof presents a frantic collision of warped vocals, blown-out percussive blasts, and menacing sound design.
