Biography
Vintage Crop emerged in 2012 when vocalist and guitarist Jack Cherry assembled the Australian punk outfit in Geelong, Victoria. Following several personnel shifts, the group stabilized around Tyson Harper on guitar and siblings Tyler and Luke O'Brien handling the rhythm section. The moniker originated from a poster hung by Cherry's father that featured a British racehorse, which in 1993 became the first overseas entrant to claim victory in the Melbourne Cup. Already a hub for D.I.Y. garage punk, the port city had nurtured groups such as Ausmuteants, the Frowning Clouds, and the Living Eyes, allowing Vintage Crop to integrate seamlessly into that circuit. The band launched its career at house parties and issued its first album, TV Organs, as a cassette on Weather Vane Records in 2017. This unpolished, crudely captured burst of garage punk quickly resonated with devotees of the style and received a vinyl reissue the next year via France's Polaks Records. The follow-up, New Age, arrived in 2018 on the Australian D.I.Y. imprint Anti-Fade; tracked in a single ten-hour session, the set revealed greater refinement and subtlety while edging toward post-punk through its intricate, spasmodic guitar lines and rhythmic patterns. Growing international notice prompted a European tour, and the post-punk leanings intensified on the 2020 release Serve to Serve Again, issued by London's Upset the Rhythm.
