Although born in Winnipeg, Violet Ray grew up primarily in London, Ontario. As a singer and songwriter, she dedicated numerous years to refining her skills on the Toronto bar scene while also taking the stage along Nashville's famed Music Row. Her major opportunity arrived through participation in the yearly Bluebird North songwriters showcase, where she shared the bill with the Skydiggers and Jane Siberry. Starting in 2001, she collaborated with Steve Fox to create her first album, issuing "Workin' It Out" as its initial single that July. Filmed in Mexico City, the accompanying video received airplay on CMT. Ray put out Good Things via Climb It Records the following year. The album yielded three singles that reached the Canadian country music Top 40. Her blend of blues-infused vocals and country influences has drawn comparisons to Bonnie Raitt and Mary Chapin Carpenter.
