Formed in Melbourne, Australia during 1995, Violetine quickly cultivated a loyal audience through their live shows and secured a recording contract with Bark, an imprint of Mushroom Records. That same year saw the arrival of their debut EP, also titled Violetine, which was succeeded by the single “Gutless Feeling” in June 1996. When “Red” appeared in March 1997, Glenn Maynard had already taken over the drum stool from Steve Leicester, only to be replaced himself by Damian Pratt.

In April 1998 the band opened for Everclear on the road, then delivered the single “You Know” in May and the EP Birmingham in August, both drawn from their forthcoming first album. Small Speaker Joyland reached stores in September, after which Violetine parted ways with Bark at year’s end and moved to Epic/Sony. Their initial output for the new label was the April 1999 single “Any Day,” followed by a remixed reissue of Small Speaker Joyland that likewise failed to achieve mainstream commercial traction. “Crush” emerged as their next single in October 1999.
