One of the more experimental and boundary-pushing groups to emerge during the punk period, the Virgin Prunes came together in Dublin, Ireland, around the middle of 1977. Fronting the band was theatrical singer and songwriter Gavin Friday, born Fionan Hanvey in 1959, who had earlier connected with a circle of kindred spirits known as the Lypton Village. While two members of that circle—Paul Hewson and David Evans, later famous as Bono and the Edge—went on to form the massively successful U2, the others established the more uncompromising Virgin Prunes, whose name derived from local slang referring to outsiders and freaks, themes that would recur in their lyrics.
The initial lineup featured Friday alongside vocalists Guggi (born Derek Rowen) and Dave-id (David Watson), bassist Strongman (Trevor Rowen), drummer Pod (Anthony Murphy), and guitarist Dik (Richard Evans, the Edge’s brother). Audiences found their early shows bewildering, since the performances drew more from performance-art traditions than from conventional rock presentations. After building a dedicated following, the band issued its debut single, the independently recorded “Twenty Tens,” which led to a contract with Rough Trade. Following Pod’s exit and replacement by Haa Lacka Binttii, the Virgin Prunes delivered A Different Kind of Beauty, an ambitious, multi-part work divided into four interconnected sections issued separately across 7", 10", 12", and cassette formats.
Mary D’Nellon assumed drumming duties in time for the 1982 album …If I Die, I Die, a challenging effort produced by Wire’s Colin Newman and released in tandem with the box set Heresie, a mixed studio-and-live performance-art project. In 1984 Guggi and Dik departed, disillusioned with the industry, prompting D’Nellon to switch to guitar and allowing Pod to rejoin. The band then recorded Sons Find Devils, though the album remained unreleased.
Resurfacing in 1986 with The Moon Looked Down and Laughed, the Virgin Prunes had shifted toward melodic, ballad-centered pop, reflecting Friday’s growing interest in cabaret. He exited the group that November, and the liner notes of the 1987 live album The Hidden Lie included a brief announcement confirming the band’s dissolution.
