In 1966 Alan Barnes, Keith Purnell, Rick Quilty, and Tony Rees launched the band originally called the Themselves. After the name was changed, English Decca’s Deram label signed the group in 1967; their first release that year was the single “Love,” a punk-tinged psychedelic number marked by pronounced Eastern elements and a prominently twanging sitar. The next Deram outing, “Secret,” arrived in 1968 and featured a prominent Mellotron part supported by a modest string orchestra. Activity ended after 1968, yet the four extant Deram recordings later appeared on multiple anthologies of 1960s material, including The Psychedelic Scene.
