Known as "La Nina Azul," the jazz-blues singer Virginia Labuat earned recognition as Spain's most unique winner of a talent competition. Virginia Maestro Diaz came into the world in Jaen during 1982, where her early musical influences included Janis Joplin, Ray Charles, and Otis Redding; she began playing guitar when she turned 12, subsequently joining multiple local groups and pursuing musical studies at the University of Seville. The breakthrough arrived in 2008 as she competed in the sixth season of Operacion Triunfo, with standout renditions of Radiohead's "Creep," Nina Simone's "My Baby Just Cares for Me," and Mike Oldfield's "Moonlight Shadow" enabling her to defeat Pablo Lopez in the finale. After triumphing, she collaborated with Risto Mejide, a judge on the program who strongly supported her, along with the alt pop production duo the Pinker Tones, establishing the group Labuat that put out its debut album in 2009 and opened for Beyoncé during the Barcelona date of the I Am tour. She declared in 2011 her intention to perform solo as Virginia Labuat, releasing the follow-up record Dulce Hogar in the same year.
