Hailing from California, Vivian Cook creates indie pop situated in a singular space that merges singer-songwriter traditions with rock musical elements. After growing up in Palo Alto, she studied at Georgetown University, completing degrees in theater and theology, and then moved to Los Angeles specifically to make a record. The full-length debut titled The Long Shot took its name from the subject line of an email she wrote to R. Walt Vincent (Pete Yorn, Liz Phair) requesting that he produce her first album. He agreed, leading to the release of the finished LP in September 2015, on which Cook performed piano and guitar while also handling vocals and writing every song. In 2016 she traveled eastward for a regional production of Heathers: The Musical before settling in San Francisco. Once the album received airplay on the West Coast followed by the East Coast and Europe, Omnivore Recordings acquired it for an official label release in January 2017.
