Biography
Italian DJs and producers Donato Dozzy and Neel operate together as Voices from the Lake, an electronic duo whose hypnotic and expansive approach recalls the ambient techno of 1990s acts such as Porter Ricks and Gas. Although generated entirely through electronic means, the pair’s lush and immersive textures retain an organic character that frequently conjures aquatic or woodland environments. Their measured, improvisatory live sets have earned consistent praise and have subsequently been shaped into albums and EPs. The duo first appeared in 2011 with a performance at Japan’s Labyrinth festival and the release of the Silent Drops EP on Munich’s Prologue imprint. Prologue followed with the self-titled debut album in 2012; the record received immediate recognition, was later selected as Album of the Year by Resident Advisor, and developed a devoted audience among electronic listeners. Concrete Records, an Italian label, issued the limited single “531 KHz” in 2013, while The Bunker New York put out the 2014 EP Velo di Maya, drawn from studio renderings of material presented during the duo’s six-hour performance at Brooklyn’s Public Assembly in 2012. Both artists also issued solo or collaborative full-lengths on John Elliott’s Spectrum Spools label—Donato Dozzy Plays Bee Mask in 2013, Neel’s Phobos in 2014, and Anna Caragnano and Donato Dozzy’s Sintetizzatrice in 2015—before the parent label Editions Mego released the long-awaited second Voices from the Lake album, Live at Maxxi, in 2015.
