Biography
Formed in 1981, Von Zamla first appeared as a quartet that included Swedish keyboardist and composer Lars Hollmer and guitarist Eino Haapala, both drawn from Zamla Mammaz Manna, together with reedman Denis Brely and bassist Jan Garret from the ensemble of quirky French art pop musician Albert Marcoeur. The group issued Zamlaranama that year, after which Brely and Garret departed and Hollmer and Haapala rebuilt the band as a sextet by adding Belgian bassoonist Michel Berckmans of Univers Zero and German bassist Wolfgang Salomon from Munju. This expanded lineup maintained a demanding tour schedule, transporting a broad assortment of instruments while residing in a converted passenger bus, and released No Make Up! in 1983. With neither album distributed beyond Europe, the ensemble disbanded once its 1985 tour ended. In 1999 the Cuneiform label presented the live album 1983, captured during two German dates on the road.
