What began as a straightforward advertisement in a Seattle music publication eventually propelled Voyager One toward the creation of elaborate, layered space-rock echoing the styles of Catherine Wheel, Swervedriver, and Ride.

Peter Marchese on guitars and vocals together with Jeramy Koepping on guitar captured their initial two-song demo during the winter of 1998-1999. Content with the outcome, the overburdened pair moved quickly to complete the group’s roster. Bassist Dayna Loeffler and Michael Shilling, the first of six short-term drummers whose past work included stints with Western State Hurricanes and Heather Duby, joined soon afterward. Shilling’s position later passed to official member Sneaky Pete, who remained nine months before John Hollis settled in permanently. The band next completed the full-length demo Zeroes and Ones, Parts One and Two, which earned steady airplay on local independent station KCMU, and began performing live shortly after.

Their rapid climb brought a signing with Loveless Records in autumn of 1999, followed by sessions for the debut LP From the New Nation of Long Shadows. Recording and mixing of the album wrapped in less than three weeks inside the upper level of a restored barn in rural Washington. During the same period the live show broadened into fresh sonic areas, routinely supported by the shifting, colorful projections of B-movie collages assembled by Projectorhead. Koepping and Marchese also teamed with Bill Bernard of Sky Cries Mary in the ambient trip-hop trio Sirhan Duran; Hollis contributed to the Squirrels and Joey Kline; and Loeffler maintained an unnamed side project.
