Biography
Wolfgang Rohde spent fifteen years behind the drum kit in Die Toten Hosen, Germany’s most enduring and commercially dominant punk outfit, covering the stretch from 1985 through 2000. A car crash left him physically impaired and incapable of gripping his sticks, compelling the musician—widely recognized by Die Toten Hosen supporters as “Wölli”—to exit the group, whereupon Stephen “Vom” Ritchie stepped in as his successor. Over the following ten years Wölli operated the independent imprint Goldene Zeiten while extending support to emerging German acts. At the same time he redirected his creative energies toward singing and songwriting, shifting emphasis to his vocal work to compensate for reduced drumming capacity. A decade after the accident he issued a solo project credited to Wölli und die Band des Jahres, enlisting fellow musicians and associates from his label to handle the instrumental backing.
