Biography
Swedish producer Sebastian Mullaert operates under the alias Wa Wu We when crafting deep, hypnotic techno. The project’s first album-length statement, 108 Dimensions of Green, surfaced in 2020 via Hypnus Records.
Long before that release, Mullaert had established himself as one half of the duo Minilogue alongside Marcus Henriksson, issuing expansive, deep tech-house material on Mule Musiq, Hypercolour, Drumcode, and Kontra-Musik. He inaugurated Wa Wu We in 2014 by issuing the initial entry in a series of untitled, sequentially numbered singles on a self-titled imprint; the name itself referenced a two-CD mix he had previously compiled for Mule. Although the alias leaned further into pure techno than Mullaert’s concurrent solo output, the early Wa Wu We sides shared considerable common ground with subsequent solo 12-inches he placed on Traum Schallplatten and Default Position, and the project even supplied remixes for some of those same records. One year after his solo debut album A Place Called Inkonst appeared on Kontra-Musik, Hypnus Records presented 108 Dimensions of Green, Mullaert’s first extended Wa Wu We statement. Across the set he extended the material into deeper terrain, folding in tribal and exotic world-music elements comparable to those favored by fellow Hypnus artists Primal Code.
