Walter Murphy trained as a pianist in jazz and classical idioms at the Manhattan School of Music, later working as an arranger for Doc Severinsen and The Tonight Show orchestra. Brief pop visibility arrived in 1976 via the single “A Fifth of Beethoven,” which claimed the top spot on the pop charts while peaking at number ten on the R&B side. He soon withdrew to the settings he knew best.
