With sonic echoes of Anderson .Paak, Steve Lacy, and late-period Daft Punk, Walter the Producer injects soul and verve into indie pop through his infectious, partly electronic originals, showcased on the 2023 release No Substance Mixtape and its breakout single “Velma.” Details surrounding his background remain tightly controlled, though available notes identify him as “Reid,” born in Boston during the early 2000s. Guitar and piano came into his grasp by age ten, followed at thirteen by a modified version of Logic Pro that opened doors to beatmaking experiments. Sporadic joint projects under the name Reid Hosp—an alias bearing an uncanny resemblance to a former army medical center in Washington, D.C.—occupied the years 2020 through 2022 before his identity as Walter the Producer crystallized in 2023 via the track “Velma.” Built around a hypnotic drum loop, spiky guitar chords, and a keen falsetto, the song rapidly gained traction across social platforms. Its successor, “Since September,” paired with an offbeat video, achieved still greater visibility. Both cuts anchored his debut full-length, No Substance Mixtape. Additional standalone singles arrived throughout 2023 and 2024, among them “PAMPLEMOUSSE” and “NOW WE’RE GETTING THERE,” which later found a home on the 2024 EP Please Help Me, Pt. 1.
