One of Brazil's most prominent young pop vocalists, Wanessa Camargo burst into the spotlight as a teenager when the opening singles from her self-titled 2000 debut on RCA Records, "O Amor Não Deixa" and "Apaixonada por Você," both reached the summit of the Hot 100 Brazil singles chart and instantly turned her into a household name. Although her sound spans dance, rock, country, and forró, every release remains firmly anchored in brightly produced, radio-friendly pop. She places heavy emphasis on visual presentation, making her a regular presence on MTV.

Beyond singing, Camargo performs as a dancer, appears in acting roles, and serves as a commercial spokesperson. Her stage shows feature intricate choreography, a fact captured on the 2004 live DVD Transparente -- Ao Vivo through an extended medley of Madonna's 1980s material. Brazilian television frequently showcases the star, yet she has also demonstrated dramatic skill, most visibly as Diana across more than two dozen episodes of the long-running series Sítio do Pica-Pau Amarelo in 2004. Her likeness promotes a range of youth-oriented consumer goods throughout Brazil, while her environmental advocacy on behalf of SOS Mata Atlântica earned her Nickelodeon's 2007 Pro-Social Award.

Born Wanessa Godói Camargo Buaiz on December 28, 1982, in Goiânia, Goiás, Brazil, she is the daughter of sertanejo artist Zezé di Camargo, one half of the brother-and-sister duo Zezé di Camargo & Luciano. The 2000 RCA debut Wanessa Camargo yielded three major singles: "O Amor Não Deixa," "Apaixonada por Você," and "Eu Posso Te Sentir." The first two topped the Hot 100 Brazil singles chart, while "Eu Posso Te Sentir" reached number nine; additionally, "Apaixonada por Você" became the theme for the telenovela Um Anjo Caiu do Céu, boosting sales of an album that itself hit number one.

Her subsequent two projects, also issued under the title Wanessa Camargo and conventionally distinguished by release year as Wanessa Camargo [2001] and Wanessa Camargo [2002], each attained multi-platinum status and peaked at numbers one and two, respectively, on the Hot 100 Brazil album chart. Three singles emerged from each set: "Eu Quero Ser o Seu Amor," "Tanta Saudade," and "Gostar de Mim" from the earlier disc, followed by "Um Dia...Meu Primeiro Amor," "Sem Querer," and "Filme de Amor" from the later one. Although none duplicated the debut's chart-topping feats, "Tanta Saudade" climbed to number three and every track landed inside the Top 20. The 2004 CD/DVD package Transparente -- Ao Vivo chronicled her elaborately staged 2003/2004 tour and added two further singles, "Me Engana Que Eu Gosto," which reached the Top Five, and "Metade de Mim," which peaked at number 11.

Camargo returned to the studio in 2005 with W, an album whose expanded stylistic palette reflected contributions from producers Apollo 9, DJ Zégon, César Lemos, and Jason Deere. The project topped the Hot 100 Brazil album chart and generated multiple hits, among them the Top Five entries "Amor, Amor" and "Não Resisto a Nós Dois," plus the Top Ten singles "Louca" and "Culpada." "Não Resisto a Nós Dois," the highest-placing track at number two, served as the theme for the telenovela Bang Bang. On her following studio album, Total (2007), she continued broadening her range; the first two singles, "Não Tô Pronta Pra Perdoar" and "Me Pega de Jeito (Me Pega de Jeito Ou Não Pega)," both Top 20 hits, incorporated country and forró inflections, the former being a cover of the Dixie Chicks' "Not Ready to Make Nice."
