Ward White blends the songwriting approach of Hank Williams, the melodic instincts of The Beatles, and the understated delivery of Bob Dylan. His first album, Artificial Light, appeared in 1998 and featured an accomplished lineup of New York scene veterans. Phoebe Summersquash, whose drumming credits include Small Factory, The Godrays, and Brilliantine, joined the sessions, as did bassist and guitarist Alex Kemp, another veteran of Small Factory and The Godrays. Cellist Jason Frangos, formerly of Cornelius and 888, also contributed. Producers Aaron Keene, whose past work encompasses A.D. and The Veronica Lodge, Greg Griffith, known for collaborations with vitapup and Benna, and Ray Martin, whose résumé lists Marcy Playground, VPN, and Into Another, guided the project. In 1999 White performed around New York City alongside drummer Noah Simon and bassist Aaron Keane while returning to the studio to record the follow-up album Medicine. Ward White cautions that this release “sounds like Graham Parsons meets Radiohead.”
