Forming the Canadian rock act Wave are guitarists and songwriters Dave Thomson and Paul Gigliotti. Although the pair attended the same high school, they did not become close friends until 1999 once graduation had passed. At that point they began performing together in a local band, yet they soon stepped away to concentrate on Wave and completed a debut album issued in spring 2001.
Thomson and Gigliotti had long hoped to succeed in the music industry, but they never anticipated how rapidly the first steps would arrive. A four-track demo they assembled reached the appropriate ears at Warner Music Canada, and on the very day of their audition the astonished pair received a recording contract.
Wave’s debut album, Nothing as it Seems, took shape in sessions split between Los Angeles and Toronto. Numerous established musicians contributed, among them guitarists John Pierce and Tim Pierce, drummer Vinny Colaiuta, keyboardist Justin Gray, and producers Ben Dunk and Rick Neigher. The album’s tracks include “With the Stars,” “I’d Give Anything,” “Until the Record Breaks,” “Daydream,” “Don’t Leave,” and “California.”
