Waves of Fury, a British ensemble whose blend of R&B and indie rock has earned both a loyal audience and considerable media coverage in their homeland, generate a brooding, intense sonic palette evoking an unholy fusion of the Funk Brothers and the Jesus and Mary Chain. London-born singer and guitarist Carter Sharp established the group after his initial musical experience at age 14, when he played bass for a neighborhood outfit known as the Laughing Boys. A subsequent journey through the American South ignited Sharp’s interest in U.S. musical traditions, prompting him to assemble the band with guitarist Hove, keyboardist Jamie Bird, and drummer Adam Smith; a six-year-old acquaintance of the musicians supplied the name Waves of Fury. The quartet made its first public appearance in April 2011, followed five months later by the release of its debut EP, Blood in Fury. Following tours across the United Kingdom and the United States, the band settled in Bristol, Somerset, where Hove and Smith departed and were replaced by guitarist Fil Ward and drummer James MacPhee, while Bim Williams began contributing horns regularly to live performances. Radio exposure came when U.K. broadcaster Paul Artrocker featured the Blood in Fury EP on his Resonance FM program, which in turn introduced the group to Patrick Boissel of the Los Angeles-based Alive Naturalsound label. Impressed, Boissel secured an international recording agreement, resulting in the July 2012 release of the single “The Businessman’s Guide to Witchcraft” as Waves of Fury’s first output for the imprint. Their debut full-length album, Thirst, recorded at Toybox Studios in Bristol, appeared in October 2012.
