Biography
We Are Muffy pairs Nick Duffy with Angeline Morrison in an acoustic indie folk duo that revisits the spare, haunted folk and lighter folk-pop sounds of the late 1960s through a lens of ironic whimsy. Their first album, The Charcoal Pool from 2018, blended elegant harmonies and a pronounced British sensibility while adding everyday objects such as bottle tops and eating utensils to the usual folk-instrument lineup. On the 2024 follow-up Lost Things Returning the pair pursued a more ancient atmosphere by featuring instruments including recorders.
The project originated in Cornwall, England, where Nick Duffy of the Lilac Time and Angeline Morrison, known from the retro-soul outfit the Mighty Sceptres, first collaborated. It began with Simulacra Two, a set of covers that Duffy had conceived and for which he sought a female vocalist. After contacting Morrison the two shared billing on the early 2017 release. During those sessions they realized they had both grown up in Birmingham and started composing songs that recalled their shared experiences there. Tapete Records issued the resulting collection, The Charcoal Pool, in 2018, framing those memories in gentle yet off-kilter folk.
The COVID-19 pandemic that began disrupting activities in 2020, together with separate endeavors such as the Lilac Time’s Dance ’til All the Stars Come Down in 2023 and Morrison’s solo albums The Sorrow Songs from 2022 and OPHELIA from 2024, stretched the interval to six years before the duo completed their second album. Issued jointly by Country Mile Records and Last Night from Glasgow in September 2024, Lost Things Returning adopted an even more vintage character through frequent use of centuries-old instruments such as recorders and fiddles.
