We Need Secrets operates as the solo outlet for Chad Peck of Kestrels and hails from Halifax, Nova Scotia, extending the shoegaze lineage of My Bloody Valentine, the Swirlies, and fellow Canadians Eric's Trip. Taking its name from a Pavement single, the project originated when Peck tracked an assortment of songs completely alone while teaching himself drums. Asymmetrie Records subsequently issued that demo in 2011 as the limited-edition cassette Flutter + Hiss, which sold out rapidly. Later the same year, Peck's own Noyes Records placed the single Purple/Slow Summer in its 7" series. We Need Secrets followed in 2012 with a split single alongside Sea Glasses whose tracks would surface again on the project's debut album. Saint Marie Records placed one song by the band on the 2013 compilation Static Waves 2 and issued the more polished full-length Melancholy and the Archive in 2014, mixed by Ringo Deathstarr's Elliott Frazier and mastered by Shellac's Bob Weston.
