Biography
The Chicago children's ensemble Wee Hairy Beasties draws its personnel from Mekons veterans Jon Langford, who appears as "Cyril the Karaoke Squirrel," and Sally Timms, billed as "Monkey Double Dippey," together with singer/songwriter Kelly Hogan in the guise of "Marjorie the Singing Bee" and the acoustic blues trio Devil in a Woodpile, whose members are Rick "Cookin'" Sherry, Joel Paterson, and Tom Ray. Their inaugural engagement took place at Chicago's Brookfield Zoo; according to the group's press materials, the musicians had prepared animal-centric material under the assumption that only zoo inhabitants would hear them perform. Youngsters and accompanying adults were present as well, however, and responded favorably to the set. Bloodshot Records consequently commissioned the album Animal Crackers, issued October 24, 2006.
