Formed in 2017 under the Seoul entertainment firm Fantagio, the eight-piece South Korean act Weki Meki—whose lineup includes Suyeon, Elly, Yoojung, Doyeon, Sei, Lua, Rina, and Lucy—delivers exuberant, high-gloss pop in the same lane as AOA and WJSN. Their tracks merge lightning-quick refrains, rap passages, and high-energy dance grooves, securing an immediate chart foothold that August through the six-song EP Weme and its sassy, partially spoken lead track “I Don’t Like Your Girlfriend.” The set climbed to number seven on the Gaon chart; its 2018 successor Lucky improved on that position, reaching number two. A reinterpretation of the 2009 track “Butterfly” served as promotional music for the Winter Olympics held in South Korea that year. The single album Kiss, Kicks arrived in October, after which the group stayed largely out of sight until May 2019, when the follow-up single album Lock End LOL surfaced and spotlighted the irresistibly hook-laden “Picky Picky.” A few months later they issued its re-edition, Week End LOL.
