Biography
Born in Africa, Wendy Gelsanliter relocated repeatedly during childhood while her father, a Foreign Service officer, accepted assignments across multiple cities. She had long planned a career in music and began performing with bands and choirs in her later teenage years. Following her 1986 graduation she settled in New York City, where she worked as both an educator and a folk musician. After earning notice for her folk performances she shifted focus to children’s music, composing and issuing Dancin’ in the Kitchen in the early 1990s. Though the album succeeded locally she kept teaching and writing songs, joining forces with fellow teacher Andrea Loomis Towey on several pieces. The pair launched Bizzy Bum, a label created to distribute their recordings. Its first project, Ants Wear Underpants, resulted from a fruitful partnership with producer Frank Christian and reached stores locally in 2000 before appearing nationwide two years later.
