Wes Lee

Wes Lee, the Amsterdam-based DJ and producer, has long promoted dance music drawn from the African diaspora. Working initially under the name DJ WaxFiend to merge dancehall and hip-hop, he established the enduring and widely respected reggae night Jamrock while receiving recognition on an international scale.

Dutch-Surinamese selector Wesley Texel launched his career as DJ WaxFiend in 2000 and quickly rose to prominence as one of the Netherlands’ leading dancehall and hip-hop DJs. He created the reggae and dancehall event Jamrock, secured honors such as a Dutch MOBO Award and the PP2G Award for Best Party of 2006, released numerous mixtapes, and joined DJ Whoo Kid’s Shadyville DJ’s collective.

In 2022 he began performing and producing as Wes Lee, directing his efforts in the 2020s toward Afro-house and related styles including gqom, amapiano, and 3-step, all marked by an instrumental, percussive club sound carrying a more spiritual, sensual vibe. Performances have placed him alongside figures such as South African gqom pioneer DJ Lag, Ugandan DJ Kampire, and fellow Dutch DJ and producer Philou Louzolo. His debut EP, The End Is Near, appeared in 2024, followed by the single “Afrospace.”
