Biography
Hailing from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Wes Walker functions as both a rapper and a DJ and earned a degree in media studies and production at Temple University before signing to Atlantic Records. During summer 2015 he issued his debut mixtape, Next Rookie of the Year, as a free download whose tracks combined plentiful samples with crude lyrics and featured Walker’s nasal flow gliding across infectious trap productions in a manner recalling the youthful styles of Eminem and Drake. One cut from the project, “Pop the Fuck Off,” received a video treatment and rested on a sample of Pharoah Monche’s “Simon Says,” itself drawn from Akira Ifukube’s “Gojira Tai Mosura!” theme for the film Godzilla versus Mothra. Moderate attention arrived through his EDM/trap collaboration with fellow college rapper Dyl on “Jordan Belfort,” an explicit salute to the notorious Wolf of Wall Street that surpassed ten million SoundCloud hits and prompted the pair to launch a College Weekly tour of American campuses.
