Chad Gilbert, the Los Angeles-based producer and guitarist for New Found Glory, launched What's Eating Gilbert as his solo outlet. Starting in 2009 he began crafting material that fused pop-punk with the 1950s and 1960s rock and country records his parents played during his youth. The project's name, an homage to Peter Hedges' 1991 novel What's Eating Gilbert Grape, carries an undercurrent of early-rock nostalgia while threading in assorted pop-culture allusions. Even with New Found Glory's heavy touring demands, the industrious musician issued three separate EPs across 2010. The five-track Cheap Shots EP surfaced in 2012, and a split single with Octaves followed the next year. His 2014 EP Come On Let's Go included renditions of songs originally performed by Ritchie Valens, Roy Orbison, and Johnny Cash. The first full-length, That New Sound You're Looking For, emerged in 2015 on Hopeless Records.
