While calls Washington, D.C. home and stands as Musik Aus Strom’s sole American artist, at a time when that German imprint ranked among the leading experimental techno labels of the mid-1990s. Beyond that affiliation, scant information exists about the producer, who has also released multiple albums on Chicago’s Chocolate Industries. Those full-lengths pair abrasive breakbeats with wistful melodies and polished arrangements, placing While comfortably next to labelmates Push Button Objects and Funkstörung. The artist first appeared on MASK, the high-profile EP series MaS developed together with Manchester’s Skam, then issued the 1999 Seek EP. Chocolate Industries presented the quasi-album Lock in mid-2000; Even arrived shortly afterward, followed in 2001 by the remix collection Slip, which included contributions from Savath + Savalas, Fennesz, and John Herndon’s A Grape Dope. While was additionally included on Chocolate Industries’ Rapid Transit compilation.
