Following a 2007 hiatus by the North England rock band Yourcodenameis: Milo, its guitarist Justin Lockey shifted focus to production work. The following year, in a Newcastle studio, he encountered songwriter Craig Pilbin, who sought production assistance. Before long their working dynamic shifted into a songwriting partnership, and they adopted the name White Belt Yellow Tag, drawn from Lockey's brief childhood involvement in taekwondo.

Their expansive, cinematic sound, augmented onstage by drummer Tom Bellamy (formerly of the Cooper Temple Clause), drew interest from Distiller Records. In April 2009 the band issued its first release, the EP You're Not Invincible. That July saw the arrival of a 7" single titled Tell Your Friends (It All Worked Out). Throughout autumn 2009 the group built momentum toward a full-length debut by touring behind its second 7", "Remains," which Lockey produced and Chris Potter (known for work with the Verve and Blur) mixed. Both the title track of that single and "Tell Your Friends (It All Worked Out)" later appeared on the band's 2010 debut album, Methods.
