Biography
Though White Panda initially rose to prominence as a duo known for its extensive catalog of mashups and subsequent remixes throughout the first half of the 2010s, the project had become a solo endeavor by 2018. At that stage the act had already claimed the top spot on the Hype Machine chart more than two dozen times. Operating as a masked one-man outfit, White Panda issued its debut original single, "Hands on Me," during June of 2018.
Previously operating under the full name the White Panda, the pairing of Chicago-based DJ Procast (Tom Evans) and Los Angeles' DJ Griffi (Dan Griffith), who later performed as Gryffin, delivered their inaugural mix album, the hour-long Versus, in 2009. Streaming platforms and Internet radio quickly embraced the material. Follow-up collections arrived in the form of Rematch in 2010 and Pandamonium in 2011. With the 2012 release of Bambooyah, the project ranked among Soundcloud's five most-streamed artists and shared stages alongside Mac Miller, Tiësto, and Steve Aoki. The 2013 album Bearly Legal contained a widely circulated mashup combining Mike Posner's "Cooler Than Me" with Disclosure's "Latch" featuring Sam Smith. While still functioning as a duo, the 2015 mix album The Pawprint appeared, highlighted by the mashup "Save Dat One for Me" drawn from Lil Dicky and Great Good Fine Ok, which accumulated millions of streams. Beyond those mashups, the pair soon explored remixing through versions of tracks by ZAYN, Lorde, and Ember Island.
A 2017 White Panda mashup blending Michael Jackson's "Blood on the Dance Floor" and "Dangerous" alongside three additional MJ recordings was added as a bonus track to the posthumous Jackson anthology Scream. That album appeared on the Billboard 200, and the White Panda track climbed to number 47 on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart in early 2018. White Panda transitioned to a solo project that June via the original release "Hands on Me" featuring Loote. Keeping the remaining member's identity undisclosed, White Panda issued "How Good We Got It" featuring Caye three months afterward. During the same period Griffith maintained a steady presence on dance charts under the name Gryffin.
