Biography
Who Is She? operates as an underground supergroup based in Seattle, specializing in garage-flavored punk that mixes sharp intensity with humor and pop leanings. Their material often explores everyday details of hometown existence while also addressing 1990s television programs, time-traveling boyfriends, public affection, and MySpace, topics foregrounded throughout the band's debut album, Seattle Gossip, issued in 2017. Goddess Energy, released in 2023, brought greater sonic refinement and control, yet the incisive lyrics, unadorned melodies, and rock & roll drive stayed fully intact.
The project began when Robin Edwards of Lisa Prank and Bree McKenna of Tacocat, both established Seattle punk figures, shared a residence and started composing material initially sparked by personal ads in the city's alternative weekly The Stranger. Once ambitions broadened, the pair decided to perform publicly. Edwards handled guitar and lead vocals, McKenna played bass and sang backups, and they added Julia Shapiro of Chastity Belt on drums; after selecting the name Who Is She?, the lineup began operating. An early video for "The Seattle Freeze" introduced them, directly confronting the notion of aloof locals with the line "It's not Seattle, it's you!" Father/Daughter Records soon released Seattle Gossip in 2017 on cassette and as a digital download. Because the members remained active in their other groups, the second album did not appear until 2023. Also on Father/Daughter, Goddess Energy took its title from an internal joke after the trio declined a lunch invitation by citing an overload of "goddess energy." The record featured noticeably smoother production than its predecessor, along with modest personnel shifts: Shapiro added keyboards to her drumming role, and Emily Nokes, McKenna's Tacocat bandmate, contributed studio vocals while handling live keyboards with the group.
