Born on 28 October 1909 near Clarksdale, Mississippi, Hatcher died in the United States. His family shifted to Arkansas in 1916, and his 1927 marriage prompted a move to St. Louis. Without lessons, he mastered mandolin and performed blues while also singing occasional gospel material. The 1930s found him pairing with washboard player George Smith for appearances throughout the St. Louis area. Late in the 1940s he settled in Chicago, Illinois, and worked for a time with guitarist One-Legged Sam.

Bluebird Records released his recordings, among them ‘So Unkind’, ‘Crawdad’, ‘Garbage Man Blues’, ‘Waiting Just For You’ and ‘They’re Mean To Me’. Over the years Hatcher also collaborated with Robert Nighthawk, Speckled Red and John Lee ‘Sonny Boy’ Williamson.
