Biography
Drummer Willie Jones III might prefer that listeners focus solely on his command of sticks, brushes, and pedals, yet any account of his work must first address the distinctive naming pattern this figure shares with earlier jazz musicians. The practice involves unrelated artists adopting Roman numerals to avoid mistaken identity, a step the present-day percussionist, whose profile rose through 1990s activity, chose to take. The individual who might logically have been labeled Willie Jones II declined that designation, occasionally appearing as Willie Jones Jr. while frequently being conflated with the original Willie Jones. Although the suffix “Jr.” normally signals a father-son relationship, the two musicians in question were born fewer than ten years apart. Instrumentally, the first Willie Jones functioned as a pianist chiefly recognized in Chicago circles, whereas both Jones Jr. and Jones III pursued drumming careers, collaborating with leading jazz figures and sharing stylistic affinities across separate generations.
Emerging from the Los Angeles community, Jones III established his 1990s credentials through projects including Black/Note’s Jungle Music. He appeared on trumpeter Arturo Sandoval’s Hot House, which received a Grammy, and performed in pianist Horace Silver’s horn section during that decade. These experiences, together with an ongoing association with trumpeter Roy Hargrove, encouraged the drummer to launch his own recordings. The first of these solo efforts arrived in 2001 under the title Straight Swingin’. Jones III and bassist George Mraz formed the rhythm section for an all-star group pianist Herbie Hancock assembled for a 2003 tour.
