Biography
Willie Sugarcapps formed as a Gulf Coast collective uniting singers and songwriters Will Kimbrough, the duo Sugarcane Jane (Savana Lee and Anthony Crawford), Grayson Capps, and Corky Hughes, whose homes stretch from Nashville across Alabama. The musicians first convened at Frog Pond, Blue Moon Farm in Silverhill, Alabama, a community that prizes its regional music and artists. After several casual meetings they chose to self-fund a debut recording and recruited Grammy-winning engineer Trina Shoemaker to co-produce, engineer, and mix. All ten songs were tracked live in a single eight-hour session on the dogtrot of Crawford’s and Lee’s Loxley, Alabama home, with each player choosing whichever instrument suited the material at hand. Royal Potato Family released the resulting self-titled album Willie Sugarcapps in August 2013. Several years afterward the group reassembled at FAME Studios, again with producer Trina Shoemaker, to cut a follow-up; Paradise Right Here emerged in April 2016.
