Biography
The sonic output from Wilma Archer merges orchestral jazz, alternative R&B, and underground hip-hop into an ambitious, meticulously constructed whole. As a British producer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist, Archer has maintained ongoing partnerships with Sudan Archives, Nilüfer Yanya, and George Maple while also forming the left-field rap duo Wilma Vritra alongside producer and emcee Vritra. Earlier beat-focused work appeared under the Slime name before the more organic full-length A Western Circular surfaced in 2020 under the Wilma Archer identity.
Will Archer entered the world in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, England, in 1991 and later studied sound art and design at the London College of Communication. Music-making began around 2010 under the Slime alias, accompanied by live drumming duties with Vondelpark. The debut EP Increases arrived in 2011 and a second volume followed in 2012. Archer co-wrote and co-produced the track "Something Inside" for Jessie Ware’s 2012 debut album Devotion and supplied a remix of Lianne La Havas’ "Lost & Found." In 2014 came production on George Maple’s "Began to Say" together with the Slime mixtape In the Brick House. The first full-length release, Company, which featured appearances by Maple along with Selah Sue and Jeremiah Jae, emerged via Domino’s Weird World imprint in 2015.
Use of the Slime name ended in 2017, after which Archer operated as Wilma Archer. The bubbling pop single "Like a Hunger," featuring Amber Mark, appeared that same year. A shift toward an evocative, primarily acoustic jazz palette produced the 2018 single "Scarecrow." The following year Archer and the Los Angeles-based experimental rapper and producer Vritra (formerly Pyramid Vritra and an original Odd Future member) issued Burd, the first album from their Wilma Vritra project. Additional production work included several songs on Nilüfer Yanya’s debut Miss Universe, two tracks on Sudan Archives’ Athena, and "Ugly Thoughts" from Celeste’s EP Lately. Wilma Archer’s first full-length, A Western Circular, arrived on Domino in 2020 and included guest vocals from Sudan Archives, MF DOOM, Future Islands’ Samuel T. Herring, and Laura Groves.
