Winter Hours stood apart from their late-'80s peers through a roots-oriented yet forceful sound shaped by early Buffalo Springfield, Bob Dylan, and the Gene Clark period of the Byrds. The five-piece lineup featured Joseph Marques handling vocals, Michael Carlucci on guitar, Bob Perry covering guitars and vocals, Bob Messing on bass, and Stanley Demeski behind the drums. Steady college-radio exposure grew after the group shared bills with the Bongos, the Godfathers, Let's Active, the Hoodoo Gurus, and Marshall Crenshaw. Link Records eventually signed them, resulting in the 1985 EP Churches; by that point John Albanese had replaced Demeski on drums. Four additional Link EPs appeared the following year—Wait till the Morning, The Confessional, Leaving Time, and Say the Word, the last of which introduced yet another drummer, Frank Fiannini. Persistent road work expanded their audience and drew the interest of Chrysalis Records, which released the band’s self-titled album in 1989. That record marked the final lineup adjustment, with Dave Scheff taking over drums. The same configuration issued one more single, “Roadside Flowers,” in 1989 before the members formally disbanded two years later.
