Biography
In 1976 the disco outfit Wood Brass & Steel issued a lone LP on the Turbo label before vanishing. Their self-titled debut yielded two modest hits: the Ronnie Laws cover “Always There,” which gained traction in the U.K., and “Funkanova,” an underground disco classic laced with jazz elements that stayed popular with clubbers for decades. Core members bassist Doug Wimbish and guitarist Skip McDonald later joined the Sugarhill studio band. Completing the lineup were keyboardist Hubert Powell, reeds player Otha Stokes, trumpet player Randy Bost, guitarist Barton Campbell, and drummer Harold Sargent.
