Formed in the U.K. during 1995, indie trio Woodbine emerged after guitarist and keyboardist Rob Healey exited Cornershop before the release of “Brimful of Asha,” in search of greater personal satisfaction. He connected with chanteuse Susan Dillane and guitarist Graeme Swindon, and Domino Records extended a recording contract within their initial eighteen months, prompting early preparations for a first album that ultimately stalled. By 1998 the members had accumulated sufficient funds to book studio time; Royal Trux’s Neil Hagerty and Jennifer Herrema handled mixing, allowing the group’s dreamy slowcore aesthetic to crystallize. Subsequent European dates alongside Smog, Cat Power, and Broadcast proved rewarding, while the 2000 single “Tricity Tiara” achieved modest indie-chart traction. Woodbine’s self-titled debut finally appeared on Domino in 2002.
