Wut

Drawing from the spontaneous, buoyant jangle associated with C-86 acts and Flying Nun Records, the Canadian D.I.Y. indie pop trio Wut emerged in Vancouver during 2018. Bassist and guitarist Tracey Vath of Knife Pleats, drummer Lauren Smith of Tough Age, and guitarist Georgina Fairweather launched the project, with all three members contributing vocals, most often in unison. Their lyrics addressed topics such as the male gaze and gentrification while showcasing an energetic, rough-hewn, melodic approach that first appeared on the full-length NOW, issued in February 2020. That release helped them cultivate a local audience through live performances and was supported by ten music videos created by the band itself.

After Fairweather departed, Kaity McWhinney of Knife Pleats assumed guitar duties. The group spent the next two years developing new material amid sporadic periods of isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic, exchanging files and messages to complete the songs. Their second album, Mingling with the Thorns, appeared on HHBTM Records in August 2024 and included a guest contribution from musical kindred spirit Christina Riley of Artsick and Burnt Palms on the track “Your Feelings.”
