Rooted in Portland, Oregon, X-Angels produce roots rock defined by its mature solidity and supported by the seasoned skills of its veteran players. Throughout the 1990s the ensemble earned recognition as a strong live act across Portland venues. Tom McGriff, serving as singer, songwriter, and guitarist, launched the project in the early part of that decade after relocating back from a fifteen-year stay in Los Angeles. Bassist Rich Gooch previously performed with the 1980s outfit Quarterflash, famed for its major hit “Harden My Heart.” Drummer Tom Royer and guitarist Steve James complete the current configuration. First operating as the Cowboy Angels, the band put out its initial recording, Escape From L.A., in 1994 and followed with X-Blonde once James had joined the lineup. Divine River appeared in 2000, with Four Bridges arriving the next year.
