Yö originated in Pori during 1981, its original roster featuring frontman Olli Lindholm together with singer and keyboardist Jussi Hakulinen, guitarist Jani Viitanen, bassist Juha "Liuhu" Rauäng, and drummer Harri Varhala. The ensemble, whose name means “Night” in Finnish, endured repeated personnel shifts across more than twenty-five years yet kept Lindholm as its sole unchanging presence, establishing the group as a sustained force within Finnish rock. After inking a deal with the Poko imprint, Yö delivered its first full-length release, Varietee, in 1983 and registered an immediate success via the single “Likaiset Legendat I.” Hakulinen departed two years afterward, transferring artistic oversight to Lindholm, who had already risen to the status of a Scandinavian popular-music icon. Also in 1985 the band unveiled Myrskyn Jälkeen, buoyed by the major single “Niin Paljam Me Teihin Luotettiin.” The 1990 track “Vie Mut Minne Vaan” marked the act’s strongest commercial peak to that point, and Yö preserved both sales momentum and critical regard through the remainder of the decade, sustaining regular airplay on Finnish stations with numbers such as “Hyviä Vuosia,” “Ihmisen Poika,” and “Sua Muistoistani Pois En Saa.” Entering its third decade, the group scored another smash with “Kaksintaistelu,” then marked its twenty-fifth anniversary in 2006 by issuing the two-disc set Kolmen Illan Varietee.
