Biography
In 1977, five Liverpool art-schoolmates—Henry Priestman on vocals and keyboards, Martin Watson on guitar and vocals, Martin Dempsey on bass and vocals, Bob Bellis on drums and vocals, and J.J. Campbell on vocals—assembled the power pop/new wave band the Yachts. After opening for Elvis Costello that year, they secured a contract with Stiff Records and issued the irresistibly catchy single "Suffice to Say," produced by Will Birch, before moving with Costello to Radar Records. The outfit delivered two power pop classics, Yachts (1979) and Yachts Without Radar (1980), then split in the early '80s once the style lost favor.
