Biography
Australia's Yen Strange surfaced toward the end of the 2010s, presenting a reflective blend of ethereal and polished alt-pop shaped in part by earlier battles with depression and isolation. Her first single, "Donnie Darko," appeared in 2021.
Annabelle Scobie, raised in Moruya, Australia, displayed an early pull toward music at seven, taking up piano lessons and strengthening her voice through radio sing-alongs. During school years she found it difficult to join social groups and often retreated to the music room at lunchtime. After relocating at sixteen to the larger city of Wollongong, she joined several local bands, yet encountered little shared ambition among those nearby. While attending university and questioning whether pausing her musical pursuits was wise, she composed "Donnie Darko." The piano version reached producer Fletcher Matthews, who incorporated pop and trap textures, turning the track into her first official single.
Preceding that release, she issued "Pixel" in 2018 and contributed "Seagulls" to the 2020 Space Cassette compilation House of the Existential Dread under the Yen Strange moniker. Liberation Records put out "Donnie Darko" in June 2021, by which point she had established herself in Sydney. For her debut EP, Strange worked with Matthews and Alice Ivy.
