Yesterday’s News originated as an a cappella ensemble in New York’s Bronx borough during 1979, initially consisting of Tony Delvecchio on lead and first tenor, Vinnie Gallo handling lead and second tenor, Charlie Valentine on baritone, Vito Ferrante as second tenor, and Dennis Elber covering lead and bass. Vic Spina and Charlie Rocco soon stepped in for Valentine and Ferrante respectively, both supplying lead vocals. United by their shared appreciation for doo-wop and vocal harmonies from the 1950s and 1960s, the members began preparing a repertoire of era-appropriate standards. Much like other acts of the period committed to earlier vocal ensembles, the group secured a receptive outlet via United in Group Harmony Association Records in 1979. Their first release took the shape of ‘The Mickey Mouse Chant’, preceding support slots for the Skyliners, Chantels and Flamingos at New York’s Beacon Theater. Further dates found them substituting for missing original members of veteran doo-wop acts, among them collaborations with Earl Carroll (Cadillacs), Eugene Pitt (Jive Five), Lenny Cocco (Chimes) and Emil Stucchio (Classics).
