Biography
The project Yirinda unites contrabassist Samuel Pankhurst, who also serves as producer and composer, with Butchulla songman Fred Leone to merge intricate polyrhythmic textures and ancient Aboriginal language. A custodian of songs and language for the Butchulla people of Queensland’s Fraser Coast region, Leone established Impossible Odds as the area’s inaugural Aboriginal hip-hop label and performed on tour with the musical theatre collective Black Arm Band. The two artists formed their partnership in 2020 under the Yirinda name, drawing swift attention for an approach that fuses modern technology, Butchulla lore, and indigenous instruments. Following a series of Australian festival appearances, the duo released their self-titled debut album in 2024.
