Biography
Emerging from Madlib’s Yesterdays Universe endeavor, Young Jazz Rebels form one of his pseudonym-based collectives that explored the connections linking funky soul, groove jazz, and hip-hop. Their work embodies the contrasting dimension of that pursuit, concentrating instead on the meeting point between free jazz and contemporary technology. The group first appeared on the 2006 Chrome Children compilation through the track “Nino’s Deed,” demonstrating Madlib and his associates’ readiness to reinterpret the experimental textures of late-’60s free jazz and early-’70s spiritual jazz within fresh contexts. The lineup is given as Melvin Hampson, Juggy Lewis, Lena Hamilton, Mary Jane, Tyrone Crumb, Lamont Parker, Monk Hughes, and Brother Dave L, with Madlib credited as producer. Their initial full-length release, Slave Riot, appeared in 2010 on Stones Throw.
