Yppah originated as the solo electronic endeavor of Texas-born Joe Corrales, whose project name simply reverses the spelling of happy and is voiced as “yippah.” Over time the effort expanded into a complete rock ensemble whose sound fuses Chemical Brothers beats with ’60s psychedelic textures, post-rock structures, and shoegaze haze, yielding an atmospheric, calming soundscape that glides fluidly across stylistic boundaries. Corrales’s ease at crossing genres follows naturally from an eclectic history that began with guitar and bass duties in several teenage rock groups and continued when he pivoted to DJing and launched the turntablist collective the Truth. After shifting focus to production, he issued his first album, You Are Beautiful at All Times, in 2006 and promptly assembled a live band that included Thomas Sutherland, Nicholas Noeding, Jr., Mark Speer, and Ira Dean alongside additional rotating members. The expanded lineup earned strong early notices, landing appearances at SXSW 2007 and the Starbucks Mixed Media Series. Music from the project also surfaced in episodes of CSI and House as well as the Kevin Spacey film 21. Corrales paused briefly to resume DJ work before completing the second album, They Know What Ghost Know, which appeared in spring 2009. Three years afterward the group delivered Eighty One, an effort that included contributions from vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Anomie Belle. On the fourth album, 2015’s Tiny Pause, Corrales explored modular synthesizers and samplers in greater depth.
