Yugo Kanno

Among Japan's foremost composers of music for animated television and cinema stands Yugo Kanno, whose vigorous style fuses pop, rock, and electronic influences in ways ideally suited to the high-energy imagery of projects such as the Netflix series Pluto and the live-action version of the manga series JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. In addition to his screen work, he composes for orchestras and often leads performances of his own pieces.

Kanno entered the world on June 5, 1977, in Saitama Prefecture. His father's sophisticated sound system exposed him early to extensive holdings of jazz and classical recordings, while at age four he began piano studies; music and soccer quickly emerged as his central interests. During junior high he joined the wind ensemble, and in high school he started formal composition lessons. After graduation he enrolled at the Tokyo College of Music to concentrate on composition.

Before completing his studies, Kanno had already begun supplying scores to performing artists; once he earned his degree he turned to advertising, crafting recognizable jingles for several prominent Japanese companies. His first significant screen assignment arrived in 2004 with the Fuji TV drama Last Christmas. From 2005 through 2019 he maintained a demanding pace, contributing music to nearly sixty television productions that included Innocent Love in 2008, Samurai High School in 2009, and Sherlock: Untold Stories in 2019.

Anime projects also claimed a substantial share of his attention; he supplied themes and underscore for more than twenty-five animated series and specials, among them JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: The Animation and the widely praised Netflix adaptation Pluto. Theatrical features further expanded his credits, encompassing Shaolin Girl in 2008, The Wings of the Kirin in 2012, and Silent Parade (also known as Chinmoku no Parade) in 2022.

Although screen scoring brought him considerable recognition, Kanno remained a committed proponent of live orchestral performance; in 2013 he introduced Yugo Kanno Meets Art & Music: Spin-Off Work from the Movie The Intermission. He conducted the premiere of Symphony No. 1 "The Border" in 2016, followed by the first public hearing of Symphony No. 2 "Alles ist Architektur" in 2019.
